Coastal fun with Carly McDonagh.

When Carly approached us to bring together a gender neutral kids room with a muted blue colourway, soft linen statement pieces and coastal accents, we simply couldn't say no! Bright, natural light spills into the space as we take a tour through this relaxed little oasis.

"I generally style the boys rooms as I think they’re still a bit too young to be concerned with the theme or what style of wallpaper they have," Carly muses, adding, "I'm enjoying it while I can! Once they are older, they will want to have it a certain way and that's fine too".

Speaking of wallpaper, Natty and Polly's designer Largo Weave wallpaper in Navy adds a polished, "Halcyon House vibe that I was going for" enthuses Carly. Whether you're looking for deep blue skies of rolling waves, this particular faux grass cloth wallpaper comes in a range of hues to compliment your space.

Despite being a kids room, it fits perfectly into Carly's coastal home aesthetic.

As Carly emphasises, no kids room is complete without a touch of fun and By Tegan's interesting and oh-so-perfectly coastal range of prints ooze character. This particular print is a limited edition, but her collections are worth exploring, all offering a similar pared-back, summertime vibe.

"It's important to keep the colours and theme consistent throughout your home. Being in a house full of boys, there is naturally a lot of greens and blues complimenting the coastal vibe, making it easy for me to style a kids' room."

The beautiful natural linen headboard from NSW family-run business, Beds a Head is also a favourite of Carly's. Custom made to Carly's exact requirements, this bespoke piece helped "add a lot of softness to the room".

When it comes to dressing the bed, Bamboo Haus' range of 100% organic bamboo sheets add a silky, natural touch to the room, offset by the deep mustard prints and luxe textures signature to Castle and Things. Keeping pops of colour on the neutral side, helps to create a room that will stay fresh and inviting for years to come.

When asked about organisation and storage, Carly explains that she tries to design a clutter-free kids room.

"Their rooms are more for rest, rather than play, purely because they are quite small. I do have a wooden toy box for all the boys' Lego, which has been a lifesaver when it comes to keeping everything tidy and aesthetically pleasing." One of Carly's favourite pieces is "The Lounger" by ARKi, created not only with the littlest of imaginations in mind, this 8 piece lounger/building blocks set is designed to fit in with any interior colour palette. No need to hide this beauty away when visitors come over!
